Cricket is a game of unpredictability; we have seen many unforgettable stories, players’ hard work and dedication to the game make them inspirational characters of the game. Auqib Nabi’s story is also similar. The 29-year-old fast bowler from a small village in Baramulla, Jammu & Kashmir, made his mark for the Indian Premier League (IPL).
From practising in a dusty and uneven field, Nabi became one of the most expensive purchases for the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League 2026 auction. His journey from Jammu & Kashmir to the IPL was not very easy, and today, we will discuss his inspiring journey that refers to a never-give-up attitude.
Auqib Nabi’s Early Struggles
Auqib Nabi was born on November 4, 1996, but his path was not very smooth. For the environmental condition, Jammu and Kashmir is covered in snow for around three to four months. At that time, good lifestyles and cricket were luxuries for Nabi.
He used to travel around 60KM form his village to Shrinagar to practice. Nabi’s father, Ghulam Nabi Dar, was a government school teacher, and he wanted his son to study for a medical degree; he was also against his son’s cricket.
Later, after Ghulam Sir watched how his son was becoming an expert at surgery with the leather ball, he became one of his biggest supporters.
The record-breaking domestic season 2025-2026
Nami made his debut in domestic cricket back in 2018 with the Vijay Hazare Trophy for Jammu & Kashmir against Haryana, where he took 3 wickets. But his record-breaking season came last year in the Ranji Trophy, while playing for Jammu & Kashmir; he dominated the whole tournament.
He was the key figure behind Jammu & Kashmir’s first-ever Ranji Trophy title in 67 years. Nabi took a five-wicket haul (5/54) to secure a 291-run lead and a monumental victory against the powerhouse Karnataka.
His performance in the entire 2025-2026 season was top-class. The 29-year-old bowler took a total of 60 wickets in the Ranji Trophy with a great average of 12.65. While playing for the North Zone, he had a devastating performance against the East Zone in a historic 2025 Duleep Trophy quarterfinal, claiming four wickets in four balls and securing figures of 5-28.
Selection for Delhi Capitals in IPL 2026
After the historic domestic season, Nabi became the headline of many media houses, and he also became one of the important picks for the IPL franchise. When his name came in the IPL auction for a base price of 30 lakh, a total of four teams, including Delhi Capitals (DC), Rajasthan Royals (RR), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), bid for the speedster.
His price rose dramatically due to his strong domestic performance in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Ranji Trophy. Ultimately, Delhi Capitals (DC) secured the 29-year-old pacer with 8.40 crore.
Nabi has already made his IPL debut against the Chennai Super Kings, where he bowled 2 overs, conceding 17 runs with an economy of 8.50, and remained wicketless. His journey from a small village in Jammu & Kashmir to the world’s best T20 league proves that if your intention is correct and you do hard work with dedication, you will be successful in your life. His journey will inspire every small-town cricketer to achieve their success.
