Seamlessly, players also face the same thing in their personal and professional lives due to social media. When a player does well for their team, they get appreciation, and on the other hand, if they make any mistakes or perform badly, then they have to face criticism and trolling, which affects their mental health.

Although social media helps players to make their own kingdom their own brand, which helps them to make their lives even better. In this article, we will discuss the impact of social media on cricketers’ lives, including both the positive and negative effects on their personal and professional lives.

Impact of social media on players’ lives

Negative Impacts

Trolls and negative comments: Social media is one of the main reasons for the mental health of players. Negative comments, criticism, and trolling have a very bad effect on their mental health.  After a poor performance, players have to face a lot of social media criticism and trolls, and sometimes it turns into abuse, which impacts their confidence level and performance.

Recently, we have seen many trolls and negative comments for former India’s U19 World Cup-winning captain Prithvi Shaw. which affects his mental health, and now he is out from top-tier cricket.

Distractions: Spending excessive time on social media causes a huge distraction, which affects their focus on performance. Australian cricketer Usman Khawaja also mentions how excessive use of social media is affecting the focus of players.

Controversy: We have also seen controversy in Sparks’ debate and raised questions about players. Some social media posts can also start controversy, which can start public backlash that affects players’ images and reputations.

Positive Impacts

Unlike the negative impact, social media also has a positive impact on players’ lives. Cricket players are greatly impacted by social media since it offers huge branding opportunities, direct fan interaction, and more sponsorship income.

Sponsorship and Deals: Platforms like Instagram and Twitter have transformed players into personal brands. When a player becomes famous and gains a lot of followers on social media, brands approach them to promote their product, and sometimes players become the brand ambassador for some brands, which provides them with extensive financial support.

Showcasing Skills: Social media is the most important platform for young players to showcase their talent and skills to the world. We have seen Izaz Sawariya, whose Instagram reel went viral; even England legspinner Adil Rashid dropped a comment on a few of his reels, and he got the chance to register his name for the IPL 2026 auction.

Building a Personal Brand: Famous players used their social media to promote their own brand. The most famous incident is that of former Indian and Royal Challengers Bengaluru skipper Virat Kohli. Kohli used his social media and his fan following to promote his personal premium lifestyle and sportswear brand One8.

Social media is a very powerful tool for players to make their own empire and their professional growth. Although they have to face some issues with social media, every coin has 2 different sides, and social media has the same positive and negative impact on players’ lives.
