The ongoing ODI series against New Zealand could be Rohit Sharma's last assignment for India. The BCCI's senior selection committee has decided to move on from the 39-year-old opener and does not see him as part of India's plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup, Selfless Cricket understands.
The development comes on a day when Sharma was dismissed for a duck in the first ODI against New Zealand on November 4, raising further questions about his future in international cricket.
Selfless Cricket understands that the selection committee has decided to move forward with younger players, with Yashasvi Jaiswal among the leading options for the opening position. The selectors are looking to build a team for the 2027 World Cup and have decided that Sharma does not feature in their long-term plans.
According to sources, the decision is part of a broader transition in Indian cricket, with the selection committee and team management keen to give younger players regular opportunities ahead of the next ICC tournament.
Sharma, who turned 39 in April, has been working extensively on his fitness and remains determined to represent India at the 2027 World Cup.
However, Selfless Cricket understands that the selectors have decided to move on from the veteran opener despite his desire to continue playing ODI cricket.
The former Indian captain has already retired from T20Is, announcing his decision on June 29, 2024, shortly after leading India to the T20 World Cup title. He subsequently announced his retirement from Test cricket on May 7, 2025.
The selection committee also removed Sharma from ODI captaincy, replacing him with Shubman Gill as part of the team's transition towards the next generation.
The latest development could bring an end to one of the most successful ODI careers in Indian cricket history.
Sharma led India to the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup, where his aggressive batting approach at the top of the order played a crucial role in India's unbeaten run until the final.
Under his leadership, India also won the 2024 T20 World Cup, ending an 11-year wait for an ICC trophy.
Despite his age, Sharma has continued to express his desire to play the 2027 ODI World Cup. His improved fitness and determination to continue have been evident, but the selection committee appears to have taken a different direction.
Selfless Cricket understands that the decision to move on from Rohit Sharma is driven by the selectors' plans for the future rather than Wednesday's dismissal alone.
It remains unclear whether Sharma will announce his retirement from international cricket or continue playing until the selectors formally communicate their decision.
The BCCI has not made any official announcement regarding Sharma's ODI future.
With the New Zealand series underway, the coming matches could prove to be the final chapter of Rohit Sharma's international career, bringing an end to an era that saw him establish himself as one of India's greatest white-ball batters.
