The decision to bring Rohit Sharma back as Mumbai Indians captain did not happen overnight. A series of meetings, internal disagreements and discussions over the last six months have brought the franchise closer to a major leadership change.
May – Problems Within the Team
Mumbai Indians' owners were unhappy with the team's performance and the situation within the franchise. After discussions with the management, they realised that the players, captain and management were not on the same page.
June – Rohit Sharma Emerges as the Best Option
During the season review meeting, the owners, senior players, coaching staff and management agreed that the team needed a captain who shared a good relationship with everyone, from players to staff and owners. Surya & Bumrah had ego clash with management, while Hardik used to carry ego in dressing room. Rohit Sharma turned out to be only feasible option to everyone.
July – Decision to Replace Hardik Pandya
The owners and management reportedly decided to remove Hardik Pandya from the team ahead of the next season and bring Rohit Sharma back as captain, at least until the internal issues were resolved.
August – Rohit Suggests Tilak Varma
The Ambani family personally held meetings with Rohit Sharma to convince him to accept the captaincy again. However, Rohit repeatedly suggested Tilak Varma's name instead of his own.
September – Management Rejects Tilak Varma's Captaincy
The management felt that Tilak Varma was still too young to handle captaincy pressure. They also feared that the decision could create another disagreement involving Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah and Tilak Varma.
Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians explored trading Hardik Pandya. Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings emerged as the leading options, but neither franchise agreed to part ways with Yashasvi Jaiswal or Ayush Mhatre, respectively.
October – Rohit Finally Agrees
With the auction approaching, meetings became more frequent. Rohit Sharma finally agreed to take back the captaincy, but on one condition: he wanted his own coaching staff.
The owners accepted his demand and made changes to the coaching setup.
The franchise also discussed the situation with Hardik Pandya, who agreed to continue playing under Rohit Sharma rather than move to Rajasthan Royals.
However, Hardik remains interested in joining Chennai Super Kings, but CSK are unwilling to trade Ayush Mhatre to Mumbai Indians.
What's Next for Mumbai Indians?
As things stand, most of the internal issues appear to have been resolved, and the situation is moving in Mumbai Indians' favour.
Even if Hardik Pandya stays with the franchise as a regular player under Rohit Sharma, it would be a major victory for the management.
After months of discussions and uncertainty, Rohit Sharma's return as Mumbai Indians captain now looks closer than ever.
