How RP Singh and Karun Nair changed the fate of the Indian Team by their unbiased selection

RP singh and Karun Nair

Former indian fast bowler and 2007 T20 World Cup winner Rudra Pratap Singh appointed as a member of the selection committee board of BCCI for the Indian senior men’s cricket team. RP Singh joined the committee in September 2025, along with Chairman Ajit Agarkar, to strengthen the selection process.

After he joined the committee, his role is to select the players through a transparent and merit-based system and keep everything fair. His job role has become more important after Indian legends like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin retired from Test cricket.

At this transition moment in Indian cricket, we need an unbiased selection to give more chances to the talented players who could be important in the future and provide their leadership qualities for the sake of the Indian cricket team.

The RP Singh Factor

Last year, when Rudra Pratap Singh was appointed to the selection committee along with Ajit Agarkar, he brought the perspective to select players based on their merit by a clear, data-driven, and performance-first philosophy.

Before that, players’ selection was often criticized for favoritism or zonal politics. When Karun Nair got selected and made a remarkable return for the Indian cricket team in 2025 after 8 years, that proved the transparency in the new selection committee members.

Kaurn’s selection was the perfect example of unbiased selection. In the season, Kaurn Nair scored 863 runs in the Ranji Trophy, including four centuries and 700+ runs in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. The selection was the reward for a high-level and consistent domestic performance rather than reputation or IPL form.

Changing the Fate of the Indian Team

RP Singh was previously part of the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), and now he has become a member of the selection committee for the Indian senior men’s cricket team, showing a more logical selection process than the previous committee.

The unbiased selection process has become more important after the retirement of the Indian ‘big three’ Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin. When they retired from test cricket, the Indian team was lacking in leadership quality.

The committee’s decision to make Shubman Gill the captain shows the long-term thinking of the board, rather than short-term arrangements. When the triple centurion Karun Nair gets his chance in the Indian team, every other Ranji Trophy player gets the belief that they can also get the chance if they perform well and consistently in domestic cricket.

There are other all-rounders like Nitish Kumar Reddy and Washington Sundar who get the chance because of their versatility, which also reflects that the committee wants good balance and depth in the squad rather than individual stardom.

But there was another point to highlight that Karun Nair didn’t get the chance in the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025 because chief selector Ajit Agarkar explained the current middle order with KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, and Rishabh Pant is a well-established one and also gives good performance.

RP Singh and the selection panel have successfully shifted the selection process from who you are or from the big names to how you perform. Currently, India is preparing for the upcoming 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, and the ongoing 2025-2027 World Test Championship cycle, and the unbiased selection process will be the key factor for the Indian cricket team to become successful.
